Chuck attended kindergarten year of school at a Vernon Township country school. The next year he began first grade at Emmetsburg Public School and graduated from Emmetsburg High School in 1965.
The following fall, Chuck enrolled at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 1969. In 1976 he was awarded a Master of Science degree in Education from Creighton.
After his graduation in 1969, Chuck accepted a position as a seventh and eighth grade teacher at St. Bridget School in Omaha. Chuck taught there until 1975, taking one year off for duty with the National Nebraska Guard. In the fall of 1975, Chuck began teaching at Blessed Sacrament School in North Omaha. Chuck moved to Algona in 1980, and for the past twenty-seven years he has taught in the Bishop Garrigan Catholic School System. Chuck always said that his move to Algona was for one year only, but he was quick to reply that Garrigan students, teachers, and parents were just too good to him. He could not leave.
Chuck was a storyteller. He loved the art of storytelling, and for a long time was a member of the National Storytelling Association. Chuck used storytelling in his classroom, and shared his tales with groups throughout the state. Chuck was also a longtime member of the International Reading Association, the Iowa Reading Association, and the PACK/LARC Reading Council of North Iowa. Chuck also dearly loved history in the classroom, and for more than twenty years helped Seton students prepare for the local, district, and state History Day competitions. On five occasions, students that Chuck worked with qualified for the National History Day finals in Maryland.
On several occasions, Chuck was recognized for his achievements in the field of education. Former students nominated Chuck for inclusion in Who’s Who in American Teachers a number of times. Chuck was named an Outstanding Young Teacher of Omaha by the Omaha Jaycees in 1975. Chuck was a past finalist for the Iowa Reading Teacher of the Year Award. In 2001, the Iowa Historical society and the National History Day in Iowa named Chuck the Teacher of the Year.
On Sunday, March 30, 2008, Chuck passed away at the Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona after a courageous battle with cancer.
Chuck is survived by his father, Charles, of Emmetsburg. When we owned the Acreage Motel, Chuck helped us out many times watching the kids and running the motel so we could get away..those were the days. The dedication he had to our Bishop Garrigan and Seton schools will be remembered always. |

Chuck and I had e-mailed each other about our Murphy ancestors - his grandfather Eugene Murphy was the brother of my grandmother Eva Murphy Jackman. I truly enjoyed sharing my Murphy ancestor information with Chuck! I extend my deepest sympathy to his beloved family and friends. |

When it was his turn to lead the after meals prayer, he would merely stand up and walk slowly to the middle of the room and all the students would immediately be quiet and turn toward the cross to pray. He never said a word, he just began to pray and they would join him. The other teachers and I would smirk and kind of shake our heads because only Mr. Stillman had that kind of presence. I will not forget that. Thanks Chuck |

Especially with our son, Nick who was lucky enough to make it to state with his history skit organized by Mr. Stillman. I believe this man made a difference in every life he touched, I feel sorry for those who did not get the chance to have him as their teacher. |
| | Posted at: 04/03/2008 | | By: Sister Josita Zieser, PBVM | | What a great man and person to have worked with while I taught at Seton from 1977-1985. The five years several of rode to St. Joe to teach come to mind many times. We had a lot of fun, especially going and coming and even during the day. I hope God asked him about the water and the bus situation. My prayers to the Stillman family and friends, and the Seton and Garrigan families. We have lost a good person. May God give him a peaceful eternity. |

I have always said he was one of my favorite teachers... he made stories come alive and made you want to succeed. It was more than that though... Mr. Stillman had a gentleness and compassion that radiated. He was a living witness to Christ and a blessing to everyone who knew him. He will be missed. |

| | Posted at: 04/02/2008 | | By: Rona Loss | | When I came to Algona as a first-year teacher, Chuck welcomed me into the PACK Reading Council, a reading organization for Palo Alto, Clay and Kossuth County teachers. He was active at the state level with the Iowa Reading Association. He was an accomplished storyteller! Chuck has left all educators with a new challenge; to use his model for the kind of teacher that we all want to be. |
| | Posted at: 04/02/2008 | | By: Macy Fickbohm | | It think it evident that we have a lost a great man. Mr. Stillman was one of a kind. He has touched so many lives it is unbelieveable. I was not fortunate enough to have him as a teacher. However, I did work with him for two years for History Day. I will never forget all the hard work he put in for me. He gave his life for all of his "children" at Seton, and we are so greatful for the many things has done for us. I would like to give his family my deepest sympathy. Mr. Stillman was an amazing teacher, friend, and man who will be deeply missed by everyone! |
| | Posted at: 04/02/2008 | | By: Steven G. Powell | | I had just located Mr. Stillman through the Creighton alumni directory, only to learn of his passing this weekend. I was a student in his 7th grade class at St. Bridget's in 69-70, and my younger sister had him for 8th grade. I was quite a little h*ll-raiser, yet Mr. Stillman always seemed to find and appreciate the humor in my pranks. I remember years later when my sister and I were in high school. We looked up Mr. Stillman's address, bought a pizza at Pizza Hut, and went to his apartment with another friend of ours from St. Bridget's. He said that the only reason he let us in was because we had the pizza. A few years after that, during my freshman year at Creighton, I found myself walking down California Street by St. John's when who should be coming the other way but Mr. Stillman! When I said hello, he said, "Get away from me! Do you realize how old you're making me feel seeing one of my former grade school students on a college campus?!" We had a pleasant chat before going our separate ways, and that was the last time I saw him.
He was a good man, a fun teacher, and one that I will always remember fondly. May he rest in peace. |

| | Posted at: 04/02/2008 | | By: Sheri (Golwitzer) Zeimet | | My husband and i were both students of Chucks along time ago. He was my fifth grade teacher and i remember it well. I talked alot in class and he would always say " Miss Golwitzer do you have something to share with the rest of the class?"
I have cut Chucks hair for 15 years now and he said to me one day "Sheri i always knew you would put your mouth to work someday." I have and love what i do because i was the one who died his hair blonde on a Sunday because his students read a million minutes and he promised them he would. We laughed the entire time . I knew Chuck and he was such a good man and a friend of mine i will miss him so much but i will always remember his laugh the most . I hope you at peace now Chuck you will be so missed by all of us in so many ways .
My prayers are with all of you at this time.

| | Posted at: 04/01/2008 | | By: Eli Marlow | | Mr. Stillman was the best teacher I have ever had. He taught my class in both 4th grade and 6th grade. We were lucky to have him twice. He is one of the nicest people anyone could ever meet. We will all miss him. |
| | Posted at: 04/01/2008 | | By: Holly Byrkeland | | What i loved about Mr. Stillman was his courage of never giving up, even when the road was tough to get through. I had Mr. Stillman when i was a 4th grader and the memory that comes to my mind would be when we had to "Read a Million Minutes". If we reached our goal, he would dye his hair BLEACH BLONDE. And when we reached our goal, oh was his hair blonde! I am now a jr. at BGHS and those memories we shared with him seem as if they were just yesterday. He will truely be missed. We love you. |

| | Posted at: 03/31/2008 | | By: Melissa (Salz) Wilhelmi | | Mr. Stillman taught me many years ago and I can still remember how he made the books he read to us come alive. He was an excellent teacher and is a great loss to the Seton Community. He will be remembered with great fondness by the many lives he touched. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family. |
| | Posted at: 03/31/2008 | | By: Jeff Lappe | | Mr. Stillman made a great impact on my family as he also taught my brother, who is 13 years older than me, and two sisters. Who will ever be able to forget the 50 states contest, ordering from him at the concession stand, and his love for chocolate? It was an honor to have been able to be educated by such a great individual. God bless Mr. Stillman and his family! |
