| | Harry Sidney Barkve, Jr. was born August 23, 1932, the son of Harry and Selma (Jacobson) Barkve, Sr, on the family farm near Depew, IA. He was a graduate of Cylinder High School. Following his education, he enlisted in the United States Army, serving during the Korean War. On December 7, 1953, Harry was united in marriage to Gloria Hanson in St. John’s Lutheran Church, Cylinder.
The couple farmed north of Cylinder where they raised their three children. Harry was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Lion’s Club, Sons’ of Norway, and Danish Fellowship. While the boys’ were growing up, Harry was as a cub scout leader, and he served on the 4H Extension Council. Music was a major part of Harry’s life. He volunteered his time for many years as musical entertainment to area nursing homes and other community events. He enjoyed farming and spending time with family and friends.
On Sunday, October 21, 2007, Harry Barkve passed away at his home after a courageous five year battle with cancer.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Gloria of Cylinder; three sons: Garry (Cheryl) of Emmetsburg, Scott of Des Moines and Jeffrey of Cylinder; mother-in-law, Ethelyn Hanson of Emmetsburg; sister-in-law, Bev Dimmitt of Ottumwa, Iowa; and brothers-in-law, Lloyd Strand of Emmetsburg and Terry Hanson (Dee) of Wayne, NE.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters: Marguerite Berkland and Irene Strand.
