Burial is in Valley View Cemetery. | | Visitation: The family will greet friends from 4 – 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Joyce-Alesch Funeral Home in Graettinger. | | Fern Herke was born June 3, 1928, in Baird, Iowa, the daughter of Harry and Lois (Dresback) Lewis. During childhood, the family moved to Graettinger, Iowa where Fern graduated from Graettinger High School. On March 23, 1945, Fern Lewis was united in marriage to Edmund Herke in Graettinger, Iowa. The couple farmed south east of Graettinger.
Fern was a member of the United Methodist Church in Graettinger and the Hillcrest Golf and Country Club. Fern and Edmund were grand marshalls for The Greattinger Labor Day Celebration in >>. Fern spent much of her time helping Edmund with the farming. She enjoyed the time they spent in Arizona and at the lost island lake house. Traveling, golfing, reading and shopping with friends are just some of her many hobbies. Most of all, Fern loved to be with her family.
On October 5, 2007, Fern Herke passed away at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Edmund; two daughters: Diane Alesch of Graettinger and Lisa Hovinga of Emmetsburg; son, Doug and his wife, Mary Kay of Emmetsburg; sister, Grace Stigman of Estherville, Iowa; brother, Harold Lewis of Michigan; 12 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; Tony Alesch and a grandson, Douglas Herke. |
