Burial is in Evergreen Cemetery. | | Visitation: The family will greet friends from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Friday, September 28, at the Joyce Funeral Home in Emmetsburg. | | Susan Louise Hunter was born June 25, 1949, in Windom, Minnesota, the daughter of Sidney and Florence (Menken) Hunter. She was a
graduate of Windom High School and Morningside College. On August 11, 1972, Sue was united in marriage to Doug Cottington in Windom.
Sue was a teacher associate at the Emmetsburg Middle School where she worked until the time of her illness. Sue touched the lives of countless students who passed through the Emmetsburg school system and served as a mentor and mother to many.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in
Emmetsburg. As a child, Sue spent time gardening with her dad, horseback riding and participating in 4-H. She enjoyed shopping, eating out, vacations and going on drives with Doug. Most of all, Sue loved being with family, watching her children’s school events and spending time with her grandchildren.
On Wednesday, September 26, 2007, Sue passed away at the Palo Alto County Hospital after a courageous fight with cancer.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Doug of Emmetsburg; parents: Sidney and Florence of Windom, Minnesota; two daughters: Lynne Runchey and her husband, Dave of Ankeny and Erin Cottington
of West Des Moines; two grandchildren, Isaac and Taylor; a sister, Elaine Gansen and husband, Ken of Jewel, Iowa; brother, Ernie Hunter and wife, Kari of Windom, MN and several nieces and nephews.

I was always in "awe" of her--she was so pretty and knew the right things to say and do. Sadly, we lost touch when we grew up and had families of our own.

Just thinking of Sue Cottington brings an instant smile to our faces. She was truely one of the kindest and most gentle person we have had the pleasure of knowing. Sue always saw the cup half full. We spent many hours on our front steps together when our kids were young. Talking to Sue was always a great way to end a day. We know that she has passed some of those very special gifts on to Lynne and Erin. Her spirit will continue in their hearts and the light in Doug's eyes whenever you mention Sue's name. We are so very sorry for her loss and will keep all of you in our prayers.
