(Wurtenburger) Arney. He enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served as an Aviation Radioman.
Following the war, Robert tested for Air Traffic Control through Pan American Airlines. His first post was Anchorage, Alaska, where he met the love of his life, Ruth Petersen. Robert and Ruth were united in marriage on September 4, 1947 in Anchorage and to this union, three children were born. In 1958, the family moved to London. Bob did lots of traveling around Europe for his job. Ten years later, the family moved to Madrid Spain. In 1973, the couple moved to Germany until Bob’s retirement in 1980. Bob and Ruth returned from their European ventures in 1980 and settled in Blaine, WA, where Robert traversed across the border into British Columbia to attend Regents College and obtain a Masters Degree in Christian Studies. During this time, Ruth moved back to Ringsted to help care for her ailing mother, and in the mid-80’s the couple moved to San Diego to help care for Bob’s mother.
In San Diego , Bob volunteered for a medical equipment missions organization, REAP. A versatile and accomplished man; a father and good provider; a clarinetist in earlier years; a visiting preacher; an expert golfer; a charismatic actor; and a fine bridge and converted Svensel player, this retired Air Force/Civilian air traffic control specialist did just that – finally retired ! - putting down roots in Ringsted, Iowa with Ruth, and then settling in Emmetsburg, Iowa.
