Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery, Emmetsburg. | | Visitation: The family will greet friends from 4 – 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, at the Joyce Funeral Home where there will be a parish vigil service at 6:30 p.m. | | John Joseph Goeders was born September 11, 1924, in Emmetsburg, Iowa, the son of John H. and Rose (Laubenthal) Goeders. He attended St. Mary’s Academy in Emmetsburg. Shortly after his education, John moved to the west coast. Being blind in his left eye, he was unable to join the military, so he went to Portland, Oregon to build ships and do his part in the World War II effort.
On February 3, 1945, John was united in marriage to Rita Loring at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. To this union, six children were born. John worked for Quaker Oats/ Cargill retiring in 1987. He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. John enjoyed hunting and fishing. His life was dedicated to raising his family.
On Sunday, April 15, 2007, John J. Goeders passed away at his home in Emmetsburg. He was 82.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Rita, of Emmetsburg; five sons: Dennis (Gayle), Leo (Kathy), Mike (Deb), Joe (Lori), all of Emmetsburg, and George (Carolyn) of Northwood, Iowa; his daughter, Susan Rice (Jack) of Emmetsburg; a sister, Madeline Valeckas of Chicago, Illinois; brother, Bill Smith of Washington, D.C.; 16 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters: Rene Sinnott, Aurelia Rohlof and Genevieve Garrett; and three brothers: Edward Goeders, George Goeders and Eddie Smith.

My dad worked with his at the elevator for years and I remember how fond he was of him. I hope that all of your wonderful memories of him will allow him to live in your hearts forever.
