Burial is in St. Jacob's Cemetery with Military Rites by the Graettinger American Legion. | | Visitation: The family will greet friends from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., Thursday at the church where there will be a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. | | James Patrick Hughes was born January 22, 1947, in Estherville, Iowa the son of William and Bernadette (Nolan) Hughes. He attended Lake Center Grade School, and he was a 1965 graduate of Terrill High School. Following his education, he entered the United States Army where he served as a medic with the 434th Medical Brigade in Vietnam.
On May 2, 1970, Jim was united in marriage to Linda Crawmer at Assumption Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. The couple made their home in Graettinger. Jim was currently employed by Palo Alto County as foreman of the Graettinger secondary road Department. He spent 39 and ˝ years working for Palo Alto County.
Jim was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Graettinger American Legion Post #162. Jim enjoyed farming, gardening and all kinds of sports especially Nascar. Most of all, he loved to spend time with his grandchildren.
On Friday, December 4, 2009, Jim passed away at his home in Graettinger.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Linda of Graettinger; two children: Tom Hughes of Graettinger and Cheryl (Hughes) and husband, Captain Gordon Briscoe of Fort Bliss Army Base - El Paso, Texas; special “children”, Jo and Bob Rehm; three sisters: Mary Murphy of Rochester, Washington, Cecelia Finnegan and husband, Albert of Ruthven, Iowa and Theresa Hughes of Blanco, Texas; three brothers: Frank Hughes and wife, Eva of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Bill Hughes of Clear Lake, Iowa and Bob Hughes of Sioux City, Iowa; eight grandchildren: Alexandria, Ashley, Austin, Alana, Lauren and Kyle Rehm and Shanna and Alessandra Briscoe; brothers and sisters-in-law: Bob Crawmer and wife, Peg of Layton, Utah, Larry Crawmer and wife, Beth of Sierra Vista, Arizona, John Crawmer and wife, Bekki of Bandera, Texas, Angela Flynn of Elmore, Minnesota and Bob Dunigan of Goose Creek, South Carolina; and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: John, Vincent, Richard and Tony Hughes; mother and father-in-law: Roy and Alice (Hickey) Crawmer; and his sister-in-law, Mary Dunigan.
