Ahh, the days and hours…we practically grew-up on Dannie and Gertie’s farm. Mom, (Marge) would just call and ask Gertie what she was doing and before you knew it we were there helping with the chores, painting the back forty, picking/canning corn….and all the stories Mom would tell like the one where Gertie was teaching her how to drive and they ended up in ditch. The time Gertie and Dannie were taking care of us and my sister Cathy almost burnt down their house. Gertie always called and sang Happy Birthday to me….my birthday is January 12th…I knew something was wrong…God only knows how much I am going to miss her…Love her forever Laurie (unable to make funeral – living in Concord, CA).

Gertie was an awesome lady, with great faith and loved by many. As I look back on my life, Gertie and Danie, were always there. They were wonderful friends to my Mom and Dad and just like family to my siblings and me. I think I was a teenager before I realized we really weren't related! I am thankful for all the memories. God Bless you Gertie for all your good deeds on earth. Rest in peace.

I am so sorry to hear about Gertie's death. I hadn't seen her in a while, but when I did have the opportunity to go to a family reunion or a family funeral, she was always there and always made a point to come and spend some time with me. She was a special lady and will certainly be missed. My sister Pat Olson/Overman called and told me of her death.

Gertie quietly exited Planet Earth on Wednesday. Oh, the reunion on the other side! Danie-Gertie; Fogarty-Kliegl; Farmer-Sweeney. My children--and I'm sure my nieces and nephews, too--have always known Danie and Gertie as family. In Iowa, it's now time for Gertie's funeral service. In Oregon, I sit writing this note as tears stream. Dear Gertie, how you were loved and how you will be missed. I give thanks for your life--and for being an important part of mine.
