Harold James Wood was born June 5, 1922, in Evan, Minnesota, the son of Ralph and Mary (Myers) Wood. The family moved to Rodman when Harold was four years old. He attended country school until 9th grade when he had to quit and help his dad with the potato farm. On January 4, 1942, Harold was united in marriage to Verdine Wickey in Emmetsburg, Iowa. Harold farmed in the Emmetsburg area for over 50 years, and he enjoyed actively helping his two sons with day to day farming. Harold was a member of Calvary Gospel Assembly Church in Estherville, and he attended Grace Baptist Church in Emmetsburg. He measured land for FSA for 30 years, and he served for fifteen years on the Farm Bureau Board. Harold enjoyed family history, genealogy, visiting with relatives wherever they resided, and having coffee at the Cylinder Café, McNally’s Bakeshop, Food Pride, the elevator and the Senior Dinner Date. He and Verdine spent 25 winters in Arizona where they played lawn bowling and bocce ball. Harold also loved to go for drives to look at the crops, but most of all, he loved his family. On Monday, October 27, 2008, Harold Wood passed away in Frisco, Texas. Gerald & Dale, We are sorry to hear of your dad's death. We will be in Des Moines this weekend so we'll be unable to attend the services. We use to haul grain and other custom work for Harold and it was always our pleasure to work for him. He was a good neighbor & friend. And another one of those great Cylinder people who lived in a great community. Long live the memory of Harold Wood.
