Bettejo Shafar was born August 13, 1922, in Rodman, Iowa the daughter of Fay and Norma (Hedrick) Shafar. She grew up on a farm and learned to work hard as a young child with 12 siblings. She was a graduate of Bedford High School. Following her education, Bette entered the United States Navy serving during WWII.
On April 26, 1946, Bette was united in marriage to DeWayne Priest in Teton, Idaho. The couple moved their family to Emmetsburg where they worked and raised their family. Bette worked in many different places in food service throughout her life.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, V.F.W. Post #2295, Pythian Sisters and the Palo Alto Hospital Auxiliary. Bette liked to spend time volunteering at the Multi-purpose Senior Center in Emmetsburg after she retired. She enjoyed camping, reading, word search puzzles, playing solitaire, doing needlework and crocheting. She loved being with family and having coffee with friends.
On Tuesday, August 7, 2018, Bettejo passed away at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg. She was 95.
Left to cherish her memory are her four sons: Danny Priest (Linda) of Bolingbrook, IL, Lynn Priest of Ordway, CO, Rev. David Priest (LaVonne) of Grand Prairie, TX and Randy Priest (Beth) of Jackson, MN; 15 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and 8 great-great-grandchildren.
Bette was preceded in death by her parents; husband, DeWayne; son, Larry Priest; great-granddaughter, Angel Priest; great-great-granddaughter; Natalie Ezeanya; and 12 brothers and sisters.
Sympathy is extended to Betty's family - she will go down in history at the VFW Auxiliary as the "poppy lady". We could always depend on her for poppy day!
