Dear family of Iola
I remember your Mom when I was attending Iowa Lakes LPN program in 1972. I got to know her quite well while doing my rotations at the Emmetsburg hospital. She was so kind and so encouraging to everyone. You are blessed to have such a great Mom.
Funeral Services for Iola will take place Monday at 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 14, 2018 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Burial is in West Bend Cemetery, West Bend, Iowa.
Iola was born April 8, 1926 in rural Harcourt, Iowa, the daughter of Paul and Myrtle (Mars) Selander. She grew up in the Harcourt, Iowa area, and she was a 1943 graduate of Harcourt Community High School. Following high school graduation, she moved to West Bend where she met her future husband and worked at the café. On December 31, 1948, Iola was united in marriage to Richard Rasmussen and to this union, five children were born. Richard preceded Iola in death in 1975. Iola married Lewis Block on June 5, 1982, and he preceded her in death in 2014.
Iola was a very hard worker. In 1969, and at the age of 43, she began nurses training. She became an LPN, and she worked at the Humboldt and Palo Alto County Hospitals. She was one of the pioneers in hospice, working as a nurse before the program began.
First and foremost, Iola loved all of her family, her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She spent many hours crocheting blankets for every grand and great-grandchild. She enjoyed playing bingo and calling it, and she was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. Iola liked traveling, and she and Lewis would beautify roads by picking up cans to help pay for trips. One of her other favorite pastimes was going to dances. She will be remembered for her line: "I can't dance, but I sure can intermission."
On May 10, 2018, Iola passed away at Wesley Acres in Des Moines, Iowa.
Left to cherish her memory are her two daughters: Kathleen Baltisberger of Ankeny, Iowa and Marilyn Banwart (Mike) of Emmetsburg, Iowa; her son, Bruce Rasmussen (Julia) of Unionville, Missouri; brother, Kenneth Selander of Fort Dodge; two sisters: Clarice Lundberg of Dayton, Iowa and Marvel Peters of Des Moines, Iowa; 11 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands: Richard Rasmussen and Lewis Block; two sons: Richard P. Rasmussen and Ronald R. Rasmussen; great-granddaughter, Brenna G. Sullivan and her son-in-law, Jack Baltisberger.
