Kathryn M. Nelson

Kathryn Marie Nelson, daughter of Albert Cato and Phyllis (Kostad) Westby was born March 17, 1949 in Dawson, MN. She was a graduate of Dawson High School.

Kathy lived in Graettinger, Estherville and Emmetsburg throughout most of her adult life, raising her children in the Graettinger area. She worked as a CNA at Rosewood in Estherville and as a home health nurse. She truly enjoyed taking care of the elderly, and she would give her shirt off of her back for anyone in need. She loved playing pranks on her siblings and cousins, and she was the life of parties. Kathy was a true lover of Western movies, songs, books and life. Her family brought her the most joy in life, and she will be remembered for her wonderful smile and laugh.

Kathy was a member of Lost Island Lutheran Church. On Wednesday, May 10, 2017, Kathy passed away at Mercy Hospital in Mason City, IA.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Kelley Jo Nelson (Tom), Stacy Lynn Whitney (Joe) of Emmetsburg, Clint Nelson (fiancé, Tammy Williams) of Fenton, IA and Zachary Nelson (fiancé, Lindsey Johnson) of Estherville; three grandchildren: Paige Jewell, Noah Jewell, Cooper Whitney Jordyn Whitney, Ariyonna Williams and Riley Johnson; brother, Michael Westby (Beth) of Dawson, MN; sister, Alice Westby of Jacksonville; Aunt, Helen Haverburg and nieces: Tobi Kemen and Mackenzie Peterson.
Kathy was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will take place Tuesday, May 16th from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Joyce-Alesch Funeral Home in Graettinger. Private family services will be held. Online condolences: joycefuneralhomes.com.

She was such a pretty redhead and always had a smile on her face and a kind word for EVERYONE!!
So much fun to be around and was so generous and caring. So enjoyed her "pranks" in study hall, she was a hoot. Kathy will be missed.

We remember Kathy as a smiling, caring sister-in-law who had a great laugh. I especially enjoyed our time together in the kitchen after a big family dinner at Harry and Betty's farm. Kathy would always wash the dishes, and Debbie and I would clean up and dry, all the time talking and catching up. She was interested in what we were doing, and she happily talked about her kids. She truly loved them. Denny and I send thoughts and prayers in sympathy.

So sorry to hear the passing of your mother. Mike had called yesterday to let me know. Your mother and I were very good friends in high school and after high school; we lived 4 miles apart. We had lots of good times and many good memories. Our prayers are with you and your families.

Sending out prayers for Kathy's children & her friends. She was my cousin and I was saddened to hear of her death when Mike called me. Hadn't seen her for many years, but remember well when our families would all get together.

I have known your mother since I can remember. Growing up with you as neighbors gave me the opportunity to babysit for you kids when you were very little. I have remained in touch with your mom since then. She was very very proud of each and every one of you and loved all of her grandkids just the same. She will be a memory in all of your hearts forever !! She always asked how my mom and dad were as she and your Dad were good friends with them while doing the "neighborly visits". Hold her memories near and dear and you will feel her by your side at all times. Will miss talking to her. Hugs to all of you kiddos!! Love you all !!!

CandleI worked with Kathy at Rosewood and we became friends, she would talk about her kids often with such love. Later I got to also work with Stacy also. Such a nice lady! Praying for your family during this time for peace and strength. God bless you and be with you all.
